Reader Pam tips us that: The potholes previously repaired on Huguenot Bridge have become bad, unrepaired, potholes again.  The speed limit on the bridge is 45 mph; however, driving over 20 mph is dangerous because of having to dodge the potholes.  Who is responsible for fixing this.  VDOT referred me to Henrico County, which is obviously not correct, and phone calls to the City of Richmond have not helped.

Scary news out of Chesterfield where a rabid pothole unleashed its terror on a couple travelling on the Powhite Parkway. NBC 12's Tara Morgan reports:

Dalton was at the wheel, his wife in the passenger seat. They were about a quarter mile past the toll plaza near the Courthouse Road exit Thursday when another vehicle passed by.

"It hit a pothole and it was so quick that this bounced out of the pothole and into our car," said Dalton.

All Dalton could see in his rearview mirror was shattered plastic. The concrete chunk was lodged in the headlight.

"We were really lucky and blessed that it hit there, and not the windshield," said Dalton.

CBS 6 reports that a number of drivers are seeking compensation from the City of Richmond for damage sustained while driving on area streets. Says the report:

Drivers are spending hundreds of dollars on pothole repairs, they're on the interstates, on city streets, and some drivers say it seems like they are everywhere.

The City of Richmond pays for vehicles damaged in the city by potholes when vehicle claims are made by some drivers.

Spokesperson Sharon North, explained that there is a process for drivers to go through, if they feel the city is responsible for damage to their cars.

"Contact city attorney's office, provide information, documentation, nature of claim, and why you think city is responsible," said North.

From the Governor's office:

RICHMOND Governor Bob McDonnell today directed the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to focus efforts during March on patching the thousands of potholes giving motorists bumpy reminders of the hard winter Virginia has endured. This winter’s repeated historic blasts of snow, ice and rain coupled with colder-than-average temperatures have resulted in a proliferation of potholes on Virginia’s roads.

Following the Governor’s directive, VDOT will make pothole repair its top priority between March 1 and March 31. The agency will use state crews and contractors to conduct a pothole blitz aimed at quickly identifying and repairing roadway hazards. VDOT is also asking for citizen’s help to identify potholes as they form to speed repairs.

Speaking about the effort, Governor McDonnell noted, “VDOT’s top priorities are motorist safety and emergency response. Potholes are a roadway hazard and a nuisance for every person driving our highways, that’s why we’re declaring a Pothole Blitz this March.  We are going all-out to repair these pavements and make traveling safer and more comfortable for Virginians.”

AAA expert shares some safe pothole avoidance tips on WHSV.com

- Keep an eye on traffic patterns. Cars that slow down or move quickly to other lanes may be a sign of major potholes or road damage ahead.

- Beware of snow, ice or water that may be concealing a deep pothole.

- Report major potholes or road damage to your state, or local transportation department

- Avoid swerving. Swerving can cause a loss of vehicle control

- Slow down. Carefully avoid sharp impact with potholes.

- Roll through. Rolling through the pothole is better than braking rapidly.

- Inflate tires properly. Over inflated and under inflated tires increase risk of tire and wheel damage.
